A NEW MATERIAL
The T.E.C. (Tapioca Encased Chair) is a chair seat and back made for biomaterial research. This was an opportunity to look into the materials of the future and what needs to be considered when designing for sustainability.
The biomaterial is made from tapioca starch, the tapioca starch pearls act as a composite, then tapioca starch water is added to bind them together. Once baked it forms a highly rigid material with a unique appearance similar to styrofoam.
This biomaterial was then mounted to a chair frame to push it to its limits. It held up and was able to hold a persons weight.
